Short Video taken 2 weeks before the FAI Open on the St Ferriol Slope (Copyright Pierre Diatta)

The region and the meteo in the south west of France is dominated by the Pyrenees mountains that are creating an airflow either from the Mediterranean See to the Atlantic Ocean or vice-versa. Consequently , only two wind directions are experienced and are leading to the two slopes that are selected for the FAI contest:

Both slopes are approx. 75km away from each other which is not very practical but weather forecast is reliable in the region an permits to select the slope two or one days before the competition. It is consequently important to stay in contact the organizers team (via internet or phone) in order to know the selected slope.

A lot of F3F competitions have been flown on both slopes and a very successful French Championships were held in St. Ferriol in 2007, and of course, a first International Open in October 2007. Just have a look on some pictures of the Last French championship 2007 or of the first International Open: Saint Ferriol is certainly the preferred slope as we find there a sharp edge with limited thermal influence. Laurac has no sharp profile and the famous Vent d'Autan is in most cases quiet strong with thermal influence. The chance to fly on one or the other slope is 50/50.

Parking and accommodation on both spots is the same with cars close to the flying area and no significant walking distance but protection against cold and windy conditions is very important.

For the precise location of slopes, please refer and print out the maps.

UPDATE: **** Please read carefully the local rules ****

Inscription will be accepted until the Saturday 9th of March 2009

*** Inscriptions avant le samedi 9 Mars 2009 ***
